two interpretations of the same patch of sidewalk

it happens when you’re just walking along.

DSC06557you may even be whistling to yourself, striding, eyes forward.

DSC06558but more likely is the fact that your eyes are cast downward — how much blue sky can you possibly look at after all, and there it is–a patch of wet sidewalk, concrete slick with the runoff from a broken sprinkler head–and you think that it’s perfectly composed, subtle, and graphic, the pine needles cryptic hieroglyphs that if you look at long enough will tell you the mysteries of the universe (in song.)
