more later, but first, and then (ways of delaying the inevitable)

“and  then,” is at the heart of a good shaggy dog story; extending the listener’s anticipation of the punchline, a little line of drool slipping down their chin, eyes a-bug, hair falling forward as they lean in to hear every single word you have to say.

just as ‘more later’ and ‘but first’ are good ways for the story-teller to regroup, reload, reposition, reconnoiter, and eventually reveal whatever it is they’ve been building up to, on the verge of delivering the goods (but who wants it to end?)

p.s. if you were expecting a point to this post, you’ll only find it in the accompanying photograph–more later.
