i walked along the edge of the world today

I walked along the edge of the world today.

Its contours rolled & undulated, a train of green-brown fabric flowing from behind my shoulders, visible only if I turned my head quickly & then just for that instant.

It was as light as the wind beneath a bird’s wings, patient & blue.  The world, a moon, the sun its compass, heartbeats visible beneath its dark yellow feathers.

I let it embrace me, this rough warmth encountered in cool shade a hand upon my shoulder, its breath whispery & tinted by the scent of the earth.

I walked along the edge of the world today.

Surprised, startled really, by its sharpness (honed, whetted) edges at every turn.

A bower, a pillow of comfort (& beauty) just past its serration; a spiral of anticipation.   I walked along the edge of the world today.
